This concert features Urban Nocturnes members Karen Sinclair (violin), Christopher McKay (viola), Melita Hunsinger (cello) and Erin Finkelstein (clarinet), as well as guest violinist, Leah Latorraca. The program opens with Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 76 No. 3 “Emperor,” so named for its second movement which is based on a hymn Haydn composed for Emperor Francis II. The melody became the national anthem of Austria and later, of Germany. Guillaume Connesson’s Disco Toccata for clarinet and cello follows, an energetic showpiece based on the pulsating rhythms and melodic patterns of disco music. The concert closes with one of Brahms’s final compositions, the Clarinet Quintet in B Minor Op. 115, a lush and lyrical piece which many consider to be his most profound and deeply introspective chamber work.
